Eastern Phase of Manhattan's Hudson Yards

Project Experience: Analyzing Mega-Development Dynamics

Collaborators: Cornell M.S.AUD '24 Cohort

Instructor:Jae Shin and Damon Rich

During the second semester of the MSAUD program, under the expert guidance of Professors Jae Shin and Damon Rich, we embarked on a comprehensive study of mega-development projects in New York City, with a particular focus on Hudson Yards. This project provided us with invaluable insights into the complexities of urban development at a large scale.

A pivotal question we explored was, "Who decides that Hudson Yards got built in New York City?" This inquiry led us to examine the intricate web of relationships among investors, stakeholders, and city agencies that shape the trajectory of such ambitious projects. We developed a conceptual framework to map these connections, allowing us to understand how various interests and priorities intersect to influence project decisions.

Throughout this study, we discovered that the depth and complexity of stakeholder relationships are critical factors in determining the direction and outcome of urban development initiatives. We analyzed the roles of public and private entities, assessed the impact of policy and regulatory environments, and evaluated the influence of financial and political considerations on project feasibility and implementation.
